Finally found the picture..

..of this Eastern Kingsnake I caught back in August of 2001. I was visiting my parents in Easley, SC, and my mother found this little fellow in the front yard. He was absolutely beautiful, very iridescent. I held him for a short while, took a couple of pictures, then let him go back in the yard. At the time, I didn't have much experience with reptiles as far as keeping them as pets, so I didn't want to kill the poor guy through neglect. (My previous experience was with a green iguana I won at the county fair. Poor thing was in awful health when I got him and died after a month or two.)

I wish I could find this little guy crawling through my front yard now, I'd set him up with a beautiful terrarium and all the mice he could eat. ^_^ Too many chickens in my yard now though, they chase away all the snakes. :P

lol, my boyfriend thinks that reptiles should be named after serial killers, or murderers in general. ^_^

Hi Holly, Nice king, and for your interest, chickens do not keep snakes away, In fact much the opposite, they will attract snakes. They do keep them from coming out in the open during the day.

Good thing for snakes, they rarely do that anyway. As a youngster, my favorite snake hunting spots were chicken farms and pig farms. Both were said to not have snakes, yet I found more snakes in those areas then anyother(at that time)(I finally learned how to find snakes naturally, you know, without artificial cover)

Thanks for the pic, nice looking snake and nice looking young lady. Heres a pic of me, when I was your age(a very long time ago). Cheers

Well, I said that because we used to constantly find Moccasins in the yard, as well as black racers and pygmy rattlers, but even at night I haven't found any around lately. Lack of snakes probably stems more from the goose hanging around my horse's paddock.

Thanks for the compliment. I was 21 in that picture. ^_^

I think it has more to do with the lack of rain.

I am not sure about more, but THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT.

I imagine, its more important in areas with lots of rain and plants. But here in the desert, we get less rain therefore, that may be a little less important.

I tend to wonder about reptiles from areas with no rain. They are there, and appear in good numbers.

Lack of rain effects position. That is, whether they are close to the surface or not. Here, many species of snakes can stay totally underground for years. Then pop up and are common for a few years then down again.

We are in a very longterm drought(for here) Ten years or so of below average rainfall. Our small snakes like leafnose, ground snakes, etc are nearly missing. They were amoung the most common. I am hoping they are merely underground. Time will tell. Cheers
