Baby's slow growth

Buggzter Oct 25, 2007 04:58 PM

I've had Gemstone for about 5 months now. He's on various leafy greens (collard, mustard, turnip, etc), green beans / yellow squash/ parsnip/ ground alfalfa/ occasional fruit/ etc. His temps are ambiant 75-80 at night (all over the cage, though), 78-93 durring the day (includes basking spot). But he's not growing very much, it seems.

I've got him to the point that after I hold him for 2-5 minutes he often will trust me enough to sit and lick me without trying to run away. Of course, he runs like mad each time I try to extract him from his cage! He's to the age of trying to whip, but still has never attempted biting... YET!

I just can't think of why else he might not be growing all that quickly? He's pooping, his UV is almost always (90% of the time) within 10-12" of him (where most of the branches are), and he gets a good amount of calcium and other vitamins (extra extra calcium to the amount of vitamins...) every 2-4 days depending on exact food given.

I've just seen and heard of many other igs grow much faster than Gem is doing (I think). He's grown... let's measure... 7/8" nose to vent in 5 months. He is now 4 1/8" nose to vent, 15 3/4" total length. He started at 3 1/4" nose to vent, tho I'm not sure what was the total length at the time. So he wasn't a new hatch when I got him, it doesn't seem, but how slow is too slow?

I just want to make sure we take proper care of my little ig... Thanks for whatever advice you might have!

~Krysie

What kind of UVB bulb do you have and be specific on what
the basking area temp is. With the range that you mentioned
it seems to be somewhat on the cool side. My basking temps
are about 95-100 degree (directly under light). As long
as the cage is big enough he/she can move in and out from
warmer to cooler temps.

Digit was about 6 months old I believe at adoption. He was
about 12" STL. He is 4 now and 4' STL. So roughly in 3.5 years
he grew 36" or 3'

Here is a picture of him at adoption and at Halloween last year.

Hope this helps and Happy Halloween!
Linda
