Sliding glass doors

fantasyxbabygurl Oct 25, 2007 08:23 PM

So i have a piece of 3/4 plywood that is going to be the front of my new enclosure. Im going to cut a big square out....

Now i have no idea where to go from there. I tried to go to Lowes for a sliding glass door track and the guy looked at me like i was crazy and said they didnt carry what i was looking for, of course alot of ppl give me that look when i explain what i need such and such for.

So where do i get the track from. Online is my only option? Menards, Lowes, Home Depot, or Farm & Fleet? Obviously i need plastic right? to cut to the size i want? Is there diferant kinds i can use? I was thinking of something that will allow me to take the glass out altogether when i need to clean. My boyfriend (who doing the labor lol) wants to just cut grooves the glass will sit in....I dont like this idea.

The glass i will need i can order from a glass shop But i dont know what size i should get. since they over lap a bit. Does it matter how much the overlap is? If i have a 4ft long area should i get 2 2.75ft peices?

Don't order the glass until you have your track. Each brand might have a slightly different requirement for what height the glass needs to be.

I would say online is your best bet. I have ordered glass track through Do It Best Hardware. What I liked about them was their corporate policy of not charging shipping for an item they advertised on their site, provided you want and checked at your local store to begin with. I don't know if they still offer this product or this free shipping.

Otherwise, Rockler has a few types.

Many people are able to find it locally. Others cannot. My local glass shop has the higher end roller track but not the plastic.

Lastly, instead of cutting a square out of the front, why not just use two strips of plywood? Less material, easier cutting and gives a more open look to the front.

I special order mine through a Local Glass Co. I had to order a lot though.

Just a though often they don't stock it but can get it, you never know until you ask.

Definitely check with local glass stores. I used to get the plastic track at a local one in town until I bought everything they had and they never ordered anymore. Apparently I was the only guy that bought the stuff.

Yeah there are two places local that have had the stuff the one guy ordered a bunch and finally sold out months before I got there, said he wasn't planning to stock it but would do a special order (not a big demand). Anyways he was kinda rude didn't show me anything, in fact I had to come back like three times just to talk to the only guy who knew anything. Regardless when I finally talked to him first words out of his mouth were

"ya I can get that kinda expensive about a $100 order"

Keep in mind at the time I only needed a few feet, I responded with "Ok thanks" and left. Never came back, went to the other place in town an Auto glass place doesn't stock anything but windsheilds. Asked the question, he actually got out the book we looked at somethings, really took the time to understand my needs and what I was looking for. Than when he got on the phone asked the supplier a few questions than asked me what I wanted to do.

In the end I decided to just order everything I would need for the cages I wanted to build that first year. Which wasn't much, however the shipping was cheaper the more I bought. Not in cost but per linear foot, it costs the same to ship 20 12' pieces as it does 1. So I bought everything the warehouse had on hand, and I'll never need to go back. The total order was about 16 pieces in black and was around the $100 mark.

Regardless of cost it was the customer service that made the sale, I have been there many times over the years and I always deal with the same salesman (although I havn't run out of track yet). Thats why I always say check a local source, you have to pay tax, but had I not liked the product when it arrived, I wouldn't have had to pay. Also shipping to a residence is a lot higher.

They earned me as a life customer that day, I won't even talk to the other shop for anything. You never know who you'll find till you look.

Cheers
