Lobster Roach Giving Birth Question

LindsayMarie Aug 23, 2003 07:46 AM

Everday I see an adult lobster with a white thing hanging out its back end. I thought this was a egg case? But I notice that they dont drop them? How exactly do they give birth? Is there a new egg case for each brood? Do they push out the entire egg case? Or does majority of the egg case come out then the babies come out and then the egg case goes back in? Does anyone out there know? The reason I ask is because I thought for sure they just pushed the whole egg case out, but this morning I saw one almost all the way out, then in about 45 minutes it started going back in??? Does anyone out there know the answers? Thanks, Lindsay

From what I've read a lot of species of roach evert the egg case to the air for a bit and then retract it back into their bodies where the eggs hatch and the egg case is ejected again and the nymphs released. On average I'm not sure how long this takes..I don't breed roaches.. I've just read about them

I don't have Lobster roaches but I've seen this happen with my Madagasgar Hissing cockroaches. In most cases the egg case slides back into the female's body and babies come out later. I don't know long it takes before the babies come out. I have seen egg cases that were not retracted into the body and they are on the ground and shriveled up. I've read this happens when there's not enough food or water provided.

Lobsters do this, quite normal for most roacehs as well. I have so many Lobsters that once they start taking off in numbers then you soon find yourself with a population problem. I use to feed off males only. Now I try to grab males but if I grab a female it doesn't matter. They are at the point where I can put in an apple & it will be gone by the morning.

Keep em warm & feed em good you'll have more than you'll ever need.
