Ackie Aggression

mynameismatt Aug 23, 2003 08:03 AM

Hello. I currently have an adult male ackie. I've had him about three months and I have a couple questions. First, what do they eat? I have been feeding mine a variety of canned cat foods and soaked Purina Senior formula dog chow (I hear that this is a very high quality dog food.) Secondly, is a fifteen gallon aquarium too small for him? I planned on getting him something a little larger but since I haven't had the time or money to purchase a larger cage, I gave him more heat in the form of another light bulb, which I think is fifty watts. So, all in all, he seems happy. He relishes his food and loves to pretend dig on his astroturf. However, it seems like he is lonely and I think he would like a friend. So my second to last question is, should I get him a friend? And my last question is, do you believe what I am writing? Now that I've infuriated you and molded your online perception of me into a horribly ignorant, abusive fool I will attempt to redeem myself by hoping that you realize I am joking and that you are sighing happily from relief that there is not another horribly ignorant, abusive fool that everyone that reads this has to insult, educate and pray that their animal is placed in a better home. Anyways, my question is that I have an adult male ackie whom I hope to pair with a female in hopes that they will produce offspring. Upon receiving the female, I would place her in the same cage as my male ackie. However, I am worried that the presence of a female in the territory of the male will possibly warrant some aggression by the male onto the female. As animals that may be unpredictable, so I imagine that this could happen at any time. And being that the female is in the same cage as the male, she has no where to hide and may be brutally injured. I understand that ackies are not normally aggressive animals and commonly kept in groups, but I wondered what experiences you keepers have had with this situation.

Thank you and much regards,
Matt

Your post is kinda disturbing. First you offend all the folks who innocently keep monitors in the way you discribe. What did u call them? horribly ignorant fools? They may be ignorant, but how do you know there fools? I know, you did not directly call them that, but you indeed inferred it. I know this because I am experienced at it as well.

Then you ask a very naive question, something about predicting the future. How can you know what will happen in a hypothicial situation that has not happened yet? Monitors are not windup toys, their behavior is complicated and varied.

I normally do not respond to beginers, but you want to separate yourself from them. So to actually answer your question, do a forum search, that subject has been covered a million times. You will find nothing conclusive, as there is no conclusive answer.
Remember, if you provide the tools they need to recruit, they will. Also remember, socialization is one of them. F

You seem articulate enough, and not lacking in reasoning capability, but still, somethings just not right here...

Frankly, Im disturbed to the point of utter speechlessness.
