Rack Caging -- Tub Sizes?

KenRoshak Oct 26, 2007 12:01 PM

Looking for some opinions on what size tubs you use for racks for cornsnakes. Right now I use 20 gallon through 70 gallon aquariums but as my collection grows (significantly latey) I want to eventually build a system similar to the one Bob Applegate uses but with some modifications.
It'll take me a while to build some nice enclosures so in the meantime I want to build racks to house my corns individually. I want the tubs large enough for thermo-regulation and to house a breeding pair together during that season but they'll be keep singly year-round.
I'm thinking of a 41Q Sterlite tub which has floor dimensions of 31" x 13" and is 6" tall.
For heat I was thinking of Flex-watt panels down the back side of the rack for "radiant" heat towards the back end of the tub.
Thoughts?

The vast majority of rack systems are built around 23 x 16 x 6 inch tubs. These are large enough to house most adult corns, although really huge ones may need a bigger tub.

There's no need to house breeding pairs togather. Simply introducing the snakes for 24 hours every 3 to 5 days during breeding season will be more than enough to get matings that will result in fertile clutches.

Thanks for the feedback Tim. I appreciate it! And I'll have to try the breeding method you suggested. I've been keeping my pairs together for 3-4 weeks, which obviously resulted in fertile clutches, most double-clutched but it's a pain having to always seperate to feed.

I use Rubbermaid sweater boxes in home built racks for my adults.. The boxes are about 23" wide..

Thanks for the reply and pics are great! I like the fact you're giving several choices for a lay box/hide. And it looks like you're also using a "radiant" heat method along with insulating the back half to help keep the heat in. Nice idea!
