She wont come out of her hide

Alanna Oct 26, 2007 05:34 PM

I recently had a problem with mites in my Leo's cage (Not sure how they got in there but there now gone) and I threw out all the items in the tank that they could live in. IE Logs, wooden ornaments etc. Basically anything other than her plastic hide and 1 climbing frame. I use tile for subtrate and i also sterlised this. I sterilised the tank and the hide and frame and put my Leo back into her spanking new tank. At the same time the bulb in the heat lamp blew so i replaced it with a new one. The previous one was red but the pet store only had a yellow one so i put that in there. I read somewhere that Leo's cannot see the colour Red and this is why they are happy to come out at night and roam around the tank when its on. All the temps are perfect and she is eating as normal but she spends most of time in the hide now where before i changed the bulb and cleaned out all the items she would happily come out at dusk and laze about for the evening. Could the lamp be an issue and should i chnage back to a red one? What other colours can they not see as my store has blue. I intend on putting some climbing rocks in her tank later in the week to replace all the climping and caves she previously had.

They can't see red or blue. I don't know about yellow, but I'm bettin' that's your problem.

I thought it was more that it bothered them less, like humans, red light doesn't mess with our night vision, the UV/ blues I have seen them display dislike behavior

Are you saying you have the yellow light on at night time then? Then yes, she's totally hiding from that and probably really confused about day night right now.

If you are just saying she's hiding when she is normally out, she is probably just grumpy, out gecko tends to mope a bit if we do something to her enclosure she doesn't like. She'll be fine either way.
