I breed Balls because...

EmberBall Oct 26, 2007 08:27 PM

I still get a kick out of the heads poking out the eggs as they pip. I think if that every loses its luster, I wll get out of Balls. Making some vacation money now and then, all cool, but if it is all about the money, it turns into a job, not a hobby, and jobs are not supposed to be FUN.

The pic: I just like it!

Because it is by far the most non judgemental thing in my life. Money is bologna and if you do it for the money then I can pretty much guess that those people do not stay in the hobby very long. I even take joy in cleaning the cages. I only have 7 racks to clean, but some would even view this as a chore. I view it as quality time with my cold blooded room mates. I never thought I could love another animal like my dogs and even though my dogs have a special part of my heart, my snakes also hold a different part of my heart. Thanks for reading this sappy crap. lol

I thoroughly enjoy every minute of the entire process. From the pairing, to the successful locks, to the glow, to the ovulation, to the countdown waiting for eggs, to actually SEEING the eggs being laid, to setting them up, to the countdown waiting for them to hatch, to SEEING them hatch, to holding a baby that I helped bring into this world...I love all of it. It is all so exciting and thrilling, and almost like getting birthday presents because you don't really know what is going to be in the eggs. Even if you breed an albino to an albino and know you will get all albino babies, you still don't know what each individual will look like, what kind of patterns they will have, what kind of coloration. It is great to be able to have that thrill of suspense until you see the end result. You feel proud of something living that you produced, you feel proud of your animals for feeling comfortable and safe enough to do what you wanted them to do, and you feel proud of yourself for providing optimal conditions for successful breeding and thriving. It feels like an accomplishment.

Great post Jen.

I've invested a lot of time and money in my snakes, so I hope to at least break even selling hatchlings, but the main thing is it's just so much fun.

I'm amazed by how beautiful all of my snakes are, and love that I can breed even more beautiful snakes by combining morphs.

I like that year after year I can move forward on combo projects, breeding animals I can only admire online and at shows now.

I'd be happy to breed my current collection indefinitely, but I also know that as prices fall I can add even more stunning morphs to the mix.

The falling prices mean I can't get rich breeding, but they also mean I can hatch and hold some of the most beautiful animals in the world. How could I not do this?

....breeding snakes are fun and the joy of not knowing what may come out of a egg is why I love breeding and making money doing something I love to do is priceless.Breeding rats and Balls you can't go wrong with the two. I have made more money this year then my crappy truck driving job breeding rats and balls and other herps.

I have only produced one clutch of babies, two years ago, from a normal pair. That event got me hooked on ball pythons. Now that I am focused on morphs, I think producing designer combos is a really fascinating hobby in addition to the feeling you get when babies come out of their eggs.

JenHarrison Oct 27, 2007 01:53 PM

Exactly! Last year my 3 clutches were from 1 normal, one WC gravid, and one dinking project. I swear they were just as exciting if I had hatched some kind of morph. I was so thrilled with those babies, I wanted to keep them all! LOL!
