BlakeMolone Oct 26, 2007 09:15 PM

Have there been any studies that have shown hognose snake venom harmless? Because hardley anyone is bitten by hognose snakes and i havent heard of any studies so is it fair to call them harmless?Im not afraid of them or anythin i even own one and handle it reguraly im just curios. After all 50 years ago the Boomslang one of the most venomous snakes there is was harmless.

the research that has been done shows that hognose do not use the venom for defense, only for feeding, so envenomations to humans should be almost unheard of. there was the classic example where the guy scented his hand with toad and allowed a westen hog to chew on him for quite a while. he received an envenomation that looked a lot like a copperhead envenomation. however, that was a worst case type thing. i can't see a logical path where the hog would ever be a danger to humans.
