Help with a snake problem please

quickdrawm249 Oct 26, 2007 09:25 PM

I have recently discovered a new problem with my BRB. In his water dish I discovered about a week ago tiny little things (not quite sure what they are but they are alive) in his water. I first discovered them after he was in the water dish bathing. I have since then removed the dish 3 times and cleaned it out only to find the "things" in it again. They are very very small (almost not visible to the eye) and appear to be worm-like. I have only seen them in the water dish, but tomorrow I will be cleaning out the whole cage (putting only a hide and a different dish in with white paper towell for substrate) and boiling anything that I want to put back in it later. I don't think they are mites but I'm not really sure. I have no idea what they are and any insight will be greatly appreciated, as well as any tips on how to get rid of them. Thanks in advance. (sorry for the long post)

I rather doubt that it is anything that could harm your boa. Humid tanks often play host to commensal organisms. Springtails are very common, they are very tiny and feed on decaying organic matter although they don't really appear worm-like. Fungus gnats are also attracted to humidity. Aquatic enclosures will attract Planaria which are small harmless worms. Drying out the enclosure temporarily will remove them but don't be surprised if they reappear when you re-establish the humidity for your boa.

is the BRB cb or wc, either way id take at least a fecal sample to the vet if not the boa itself, just to be safe, it could be something in the environment, or it could be a parasite IN your boa...keep us updated!
