Broken Wrist........bummer

fattiesnleos Oct 27, 2007 01:35 AM

okay well any how, i was evacuated for the past 5-6 days due to the fires and while i was away i was visiting petsmarts and petcos. i found a super tangerine little baby that isnt much bigger then a hatchling. it is on the thin side but i figured i could fatten him/her up. i got home today (finally) and put it in my shoe box rack with the rest of my youngens (separate boxes). after an hour or so i gave it a few small crix but it had no interest. i decided to feed it some vanilla ensure. while i was doing this i noticed its wrist seemed a little bent and watched it for a few minutes. sure enough after he would walk he would walk on the top of his hand. so anyhow the break is in his wrist or right above his wrist. has anyone ever heard of a cast for a gecko?! i dont know if i should even try, i know i could make one but im afraid if he wasn't kept under 24/7 supervision he would tear his own arm off. i had a hatchling pull its own tail off once because she couldnt get her own shed off. i bet one of its previous cage mates bit its arm trying to hunt for crickets, you know how petstores are good at over crowding cages... anyhow i decided to keep him in a deli cup in hopes to limit his walking and activity. anyone have any advice or experience? i assume this is why he is not eating and so thin.

I would suggest having a herp vet take a look at it.

Are you sure it´s broken? Maybe it´s just rubbery, and he has a really bad calcium deficiency...

im pretty sure its broken because the rest of him isnt rubbery but i have never had a gecko with MBD nor have i had a gecko with a broken bone. time will tell, for now i will hand feed him and keep him the best i can. my herp vet told me pretty much that my guess is as good as his....

Actually I did have a young leo, not that small, who suffered a broken elbow. My vet was able to immobilize the joint with some sort of skin glue stuff that hardened. She then I think covered it with a very small piece of tape, I think to keep the leo from trying to bite the cement off. She wore this, though she was able to walk on it, until her next shed, maybe a week or so. Worked very well, and I think all were happy with the result. It may be more difficult to immobilize a wrist joint tho. The best plan may be to increase the calcium, which you are prob doing anyway, and let her walk on it as best she can. At least that way it will heal in a functional position.
