I need to put a clear finish on a cage I'm building for my atb. It doesnt need to be water proof or anything just needs to be shiny and not bad for my snake.

You can use a water based clear found at any hardware store.
Waterborne polyurethane is your best bet if water resistance is not at a premium. Polycrylic and Varathane Diamond Urethane are the two commonly available brands. If you go with Varathane but sure to avoid the Professional series which is their oil-based line. Within the waterborne Varathane there are three forms, I think regular urethane, floor urethane and then spar. Regular urethane is your best bet assuming whatever you're coating it over won't be too flexible.
