I assumed this was an eastern garter but now looking at how thin it is it might be an eastern ribbon. Photographed in South Jersey. This was in the Pine Barrens where ribbons are more common than garters. Any ideas?

Garter snake, no question. I catch these quite frequently around my work.

I agree, garter. Never seen a ribbon with those bold hash marks.

Garter. The scales above the lips of garter snakes are seperated by dark, vertical lines. Ribbon snakes do not usually have these facial markings.
