Fancy Rats/Mice?

FireStorm Oct 28, 2007 11:00 AM

How many of you raise fancies, either as feeders or in addition to raising feeders? I'm getting kind of tired of white rats and mice...I was thinking about adding some fancies. What's the best way to go about finding some? It seems like a lot of the people who raise them aren't going to sell to someone who has feeders.

Thanks,
Shelly

They're all the same mice or rats, whether labeled as "fancy" or "feeder". Find a good feeder breeder or reptile show and they should have a good selection of most colors and coat types.

FWIW, albino lab mice tend to produce much better than colored mice.

All of my rats and mice are fancies. Where are you located? Look around in pet shops or other breeders. Get a couple of different colors and start inbreeding. You will be amazed at what comes out.

I'm in Florida. I did find a couple of fancy mice at a pets
store. I got a Brindle male, a merle female, a black and tan female and a black female (I bought her because she was super pregnant - I doubt her pups would have survived in the crowded cage she was in). I'm going to give them a try. If the fancies turn out to be too difficult to breed I can always start over with white ones.

The last time I had to buy some extra rats to supplement what I produced I got 2 dumbos and a rex out of the group. I kept them and when I did a search to find out what kind there were I saw all the other varieties. I used to breed gerbils as a kid...I had about 100 at one point, in just about every variety. That was my inroduction to genetics, lol. I always loved my siamese gerbils. I wish I could find some siamese or himalayan rats or mice, but I'm not sure how common they are.

Thanks for the help guys. Sorry this was so long.
