housing a beardie help

fantasyxbabygurl Oct 28, 2007 04:37 PM

Ok so basically i was building a new enclosure for my boa constrictor and miscalculated and ended up with almost 2 sheets too much of plywood....well accually i changed the design and was amazed at how much taking 6 inches away left and of course did the last minute change after i bought all the plywood.

Instead of taking the wood back to the store like my fiance would like i thought maybe to see if i had enough to build a beradie enclosure since i keep reading about them and finding myself more and more interested. so i found somewhere that told me 4'x2'x2' would be a good size for a beardie. I drew out my designs and perfect! about 1/4th of an inch left over lol

So as soon as my fiance builds it i will have that size cage ready for a new beardie. Im going to a reptile show in the area on Nov. 25th and hope to have the setup ready so that if i find a beardie there i can bring him home.

At the moment the only thing i really know about them is the size enclosure i need and there eating habits lol. I was thinking of having 2 heat lamps in each of the front corners pointing to two differant basking spots on a shelf with steps leading up and a cave underneath. Ive seen many pictures that look like sand is used as substrate. Anymore help would be helpful.

So you're going to the White Plains Show. I live in NJ and go there often as well.

In my enclosures I use the outside spotlight setups from home depot mounted in the center. They can have up to 3 swivel sockets. I use 2 for spots and the center is setup if I want a black bulb for night. Keep in mind that my enclosures are 3.5' deep. With a 2' depth you probably only need one. I use sand from Toys R Us as a substrate, but only after the dragon has reached 12" long. As babies I use non adhesive shelf liner from Wal Mart.
