Nevada Tortoises in Trouble

JennyL Aug 23, 2003 11:12 AM

Hi All! I'm new to this forum, and I have just seen a troubling story on CNN about tortoises in Nevada. They did not say where in Nevada, but supposedly the water levels have been so low there that all these turtles and tortoises are crawling into many neighborhoods of Nevada. They showed huge and little ones in the suburbs, and people all around them. Does anyone here live in Nevada...I know it's a big state...and could you find out more on this and hopefully do something about it?? I'm just a concerned turtle keeper. Some were as huge, probably about a foot and a half high! Wish I were there to help!
Thanks...Jenny

I live in Las vegas and the only natural bodies of water hear are too cold to have turtles and the only chelonian I know that native hear is the desert tortoise which is adapted to this climate. I would likr to know what CNN said cause what you said doesn't make since to me

I would understand if they said the tortoises are in trouble cause of people taking them in getting sick and then letting them go so they can spread URI and also habitat distruction which are the two main things that are happening to desert tort

Hello Kurma
CNN can be very vague. They showed about 10 big tortoises crawling through neighborhoods in maybe Las Vegas? Look it up on their website and maybe they'll have more info. It probably is that their habitat is being destroyed. Thanks...
