My first hognose!

dangerjudy Oct 29, 2007 08:49 AM

I was in Tsali NC this weekend and saw a snake in the parking lot. It was, to my delight, an eastern hognose! Here are some pics:

Remind me next year, I'll hook you up with a Mexican Hog in Brewster county. The least I can do.

Todd,

I found a DOR Eastern on the Refuge a few days ago. You should have both species right around you.

Chris,
I apologize for my ignorance, but what is the 'Refuge'?

I'm semi-new to the area...

Thanks,
//Todd

Chris,
This Todd is in Austin. Antelope is the Todd from Corpus. Next year I'll show him how and when to photograph 5 westerns in a day

Todd,
He probably means Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Easterns are common from that area through much of the southern half of the Texas Independence Trail.

5 westerns in a day would MAKE my day!!!

Wish I could fast forward this winter crap ahead to spring!

Bah, c'mon back down hyear, it will stay warm enough, those easterns bask out on the roads in winter down here, but they are butt ugly, wait, I mean, a snake is a snake!

Congrats. That little thing is cool.

From your photos i'm assuming he didn't "play dead"? He sure put on the aggressive display for you though. That's a nice find. These snakes used to be fairly common, but every year they seem to be getting more difficult to come across.

DANGERJUDY Oct 30, 2007 07:56 AM

No, he never did play dead, though I tried to get him to. After a couple of minutes he literally went off 'in a huff'. I made sure he went off of the pavement and into the woods. I was worried someone else would think he was a rattler/whatever and kill him.

Great find! Congratulations.
