Updates on non breeding spider male.

python2000 Oct 29, 2007 05:00 PM

I posted some time ago about my 1100 grams male spider ball that was not interested in breeding any of my females... Now there is something strange, may be it happened! I had a female in shed and i put her with him but nothing, so i separated them and 2 days ago, while she was near to shed i put them together again in early evening... ok no interest... but.... when i woked up in the morning i found that she shed and there was blood on the shed. Exactly near the tail and the cloaca. I checked the snake and there was blood dryed near the cloaca. I saw there was some blood traces on the floor too but there is absolutly no scars on the snake, only blood and quite alot. What you think? Is that possible they mated during the night, when there is totally dark and silent in the room? I put them together today again and for now they are sleeping I bred colubrid snakes and with them it was common to see blood in copulations.

Thank you!

Flavio

blood is fairly common during shedding and I would not consider that to be a sign of breeding. On a side note, why are you getting stressed that he isn't breeding yet? I know alot of really big breeders haven't even started cooling yet much less even think about introducing animals. We won't even start to lower night time temps until maybe mid-december and start introducing jan 1. Almost all of our females are pounding rats as I feel they are trying to get as big as possible now and they usually start to go off-feed around mid-november. Hope this helps.

he's big enough if he's a he

keep trying....it's early......the girls aren't ready.....the girl is the one who makes the choices......(usually)

....it just started getting cold and dark......let the lights off more hours and they will breed for the holidays....

as the females shed place male into cage (or girl with boy.) whatever.......both usually work except with this big YB male.he rolls up in the girl's home and breeds in his bedroom..weird....

.....and....

my balls usually actually copulate for like 9 hours at a time.......they may be quicker.....but usually it lasts all day......the one here the other day (YB in his home) lasted most of 2 full days.......(first girl in a year and only one last year with 1 copulation and he made 2.3 YB babies)...so he ants to get all he can while he can maybe?.....

.......there is so many months left to breed..........eggs are just hatched finally...........

I think the blood is just from the shed, My het male was locked up all day with his first female(her first time too) and I have no blood.

It's the 4th or 5th time they have locked up, and I've never seen any blood.

I have had it occur

was told it is something that just happens and is nothing to worry about

If you've ever noticed how they shed their skin, the skin around the cloaca actually goes deep inside the vent. So when they pull it off, they have to pull that skin out off the sensitive internal tissue, which causes tiny little bits of blood. Nothing to worry about.

Hi python2000,
Don't worry. Granted, blood in a shed can be quite common but females & even some males ready to breed or close to it will evert their cloacas & leave little blood trails all over the cage, way more than in a shed. Separate them for a couple of days & reintroduce them. Watch her for a while & see if she cruises the cage wagging & thrashing her tail. If so, you most likely have a receptive female waiting to breed.
