i have a wild caught male that i beleve to be Axanthic. i have read that the gene is recessive. i am not the greatest at genetics and was just wondering if anybody had any advice on the fastest way to prove him out and produce another Axanthic. i have 9 girls to work with but they wont be ready till the 09 season. just doing some homework

I would say that animal definately looks axanthic to me. The quickest way to prove him out would be to breed him to an Axanthic female. The only problem is that as far as I know, none of the proven lines are compatible. You would have to breed him to a female from each line. And if that doesn't prove him out you still could not be totally sure until you breed him back to several of his daughters. Theoretical his line may not be compatible with any of the other proven lines. With that said, I think your best bet would be to breed him to a couple of females and produce 100% hets. Keep the girls and when they are ready, breed them back to the original male. And who knows maybe his color turns out to be a dominate or co-dom trait. Either way you will surely have your work cut out for you. Good luck

i think i will just breed him to normal females and do it that way it may take a long time. by the time i actualy raised the money to purchase the diferent lines of females i would be breeding him back to his daughters. thanks for the advice i still have till at least the 09 season till my females will be up to size.

Breeding him to produce het is your best way to go, for sure. The only other suggestion I would make is that you can breed him to Pastel and/or a spider. At least that way if he doesn't prove out you still have produced something other then normals. And if he does prove out by breeding back to his daughters theres a chance you could produce an Axanthic Pastel or Axanthic Spider. A little more of an investment up front, but a better pay-off in the long run. Just a suggestion though. Good Luck.
