A strange morph idea I have had

HerpZillA Oct 30, 2007 10:40 PM

I recently got 4 new bloodreds. Making my collection at:

1 3 year old male.

1 1-2 year old female (new) $175 from past show. Hope she's worth it.

1.2 07 babies.

Not many other corns I want but abbotts. I once had a strange crimson, that was in terrible shape when I got her. She never made it, but developed these narrow white rings since she was hypo.

I have seen bloodxoaks and they are not as good as I pictured. Not enough color contrast from background to patch. BUT, lets add in a abbott line and hypo gene. I know bloodreds are naturally quasi-hypo, but if you had a "poor bloodred" with wide black ring, then added the hypo, one can picture a red snake with white smoke rings.

Possible?

RIP Crimson.

i say do it but it may take a while. i have not even seen an okeetee blood yet(cause it kinda defeats the bloodred part) but with the combo that you want to do it would be smokin. i say go for it. you would probally want to start with a hypo okeetee(sunkissed) and get a hypo bloodred. then in the first generation you would get hypos het for blood with the okee gene present. then wait 3 years and get the gold.
go for it im in line for f1's

Yea it would take some time unless you got lucky to have bloods with a lot of black on rings.

blood x oaks are not great to me. Again makes the lighter orange background more red. Sounded good, and a lot on KS, but and Oak is better with a litter background.

Also the rings clearly get smaller. Ihave a snake at the shop that looks like that. Not sure what f-2s wuould do to get the diffused to show?

It might actually be easier to line breed hypo bloods for wide bands?

The problem with that is this. If you work to increase the margins around the markings, you increase contrast in the snake. Nobody'd think they were even bloods until they flipped 'em over. Not to mention, I estimate at least four generations to pull this off. One of the mutation mechanisms of bloods and motlies is to reduce melanin (or melanophore zones). Not sure which, but the result is the same. Breed your best high-black Okeetee to bloods and even in the F3s, there's very little black. That's bloodred doing its job of keeping the black out. Same with motley/stripe. I know what you seek can be done, but you'd be dedicating lots of cages for over 10 years to get what you seek.

I agree that bleaching out the margins on a sunkissed is the direction you want to go for the WOW factor. Here're a couple of shots of a family of Okeetees I work with. Perhaps taking this line of hypo Okeetees into the sunkissed corns? These make some nice anery Okeetees too. These were produced in 2005.

Been outta town.

I have one or two of those anery Okeetees in brumation right now, but I'm saving the pix of them for my new book. It's not ready for release, but pix of those snakes and many more will be revealed for the first time in that book.

Don, you just amaze me with your knowledge on corns.

Maybe next time I drive down to see grumpo, oops I mean herpo, we can all head out for a dinner, or a beer?

I spent a week this summer with John. 3000 miles in 1 week searching cuts. And not 1 alterna SIGH. It would be fun to meet up and trade stories.

Thanks for all the great info you always provide.
