Lighting - Flourescent or Incandesent?

nickrondeau Oct 31, 2007 03:11 PM

Hey everyone I am shopping around for a multi-bulbed light to run automated on timers. It is a toss up between a few. What is everyone's opinion on safety with incandescent heat lamps in the over the top or hood fixtures? I am at work all day so it would be nice to trust the light that I am leaving on all day alone at home.

Thanks in advance,
NICK

Fluorescent is a much better idea. They don't heat the cage nearly as much and therefore you can keep control of the temperatures more easily.

From a safety standpoint, the hoods should have ratings for the incandescent fixtures. 50Watt bulbs are fine. Some hoods are rated for higher. I have an ESU Bi-Light fixture with a 50 Watt bulb. It is on a thermostat, and there are no worries about overheating the hood, fixture or cage.

I should add, the above example was for heat. If you are interested in light only, go with the compact fluorescents. Much less power draw.
