15 gal High, almost done...

kyle1745 Aug 23, 2003 02:02 PM

I have added most of the plants to my 15gal High for my imitators, and I am waiting on moss and 1 more plant, that may or may not go in the tank. I still need to pick up some suction cups for my film canasters, but it is almost done.

So far this is what it looks like:

The tank looks good, I especially like the drip wall but I would add a lot more bromeliads. Even though I just got my pair of imitators last weekend they spend most of there time in the bromeliads or out exploring they hardly go on the other plants in there tank.

I know they love them, but I am trying to stay away from them as much as possible. I will have 3-4 film canasters on the side, thet they can hide, and someday maybe lay in. So I'm hoping to go without any broms. I have another leafy plant on the way that should offer some more cover and hidding spots.

T.Aeranthos I beleive is what they are. I picked them up today from:
www.angelfire.com/oh3/customecos/
At the columbus reptile show.

As for the broms to me they are a pain with the pups and all. I have them in my other 2 tanks, and have yet to have a pup grow out like the parent. They grow fine, but seem to grow arround the edge and then become funky looking. Also when the parent dies off I will have to remove my frogs to silicone the new one back in, which in my mind causes too much stress.

I think they look good, but they are not requried. Also this tank is small so I want to keep is simple. The ficus in the back will cover the background in a month or so, and the other plant I ordered will also cover the back.

I think it will work out. From the couple of people I have talked to broms are not required for imitators.

Instead of silciconeing them just use a screwdriver and punch a hole in the cork and stick the stemmy part of the bromeliad in it, this usually only works with pups who have air roots. My imitators seem to like the bromeliads I have in my tank alot better that anything else in there including the film canisters. I have some creeping fig (ficus pumilia) against the cork but I am going to remove it and probably add some more neoreglia liliputinia.

From the information I gathered broms are not required for imitators, as they are for Pumilios, so I went with the advice I got. Like I said to me they are just a pain, not that I am totally against them or will never use them in the future. I just did not what to use them in this tank, since it is small, and going to be filled enough.

Your tank looks good and I am sure your imitators will love it but if you decide to build a larger tank in the future and you have room for some broms your imitators will love you for it.

I'm looking to build a 3-6 tank unit, but it will be some time. I am looking into what type of tanks to use, and etc. I may build my own. Who knows, its a winter project.

Kyle,
Yeah, broms can be a pain but I have had my imitators for almost a year and have broms and film canisters in their tank.I have my cork bark drilled out and just shoved the stem into the hole. When I had my first tank set up for them,a 10vert, I didn't fill in behind the corkbark so they would always lay their eggs behind the background so I had to rely on the male to transport them to the brom axils. They never deposited a tad in a film canister and I have raised about 10 froglets. What I did was left the tads in the axils until I knew they were old enough to start feeding after the came out of the egg then dumped the water and tad out of the axil into a cup and raised them myself, then all I did was put the brom back into place and fill it back up.Kinda hard on the plants but they are still aliv .I am letting them raise a tad in a brom axil now so that is awesome to watch.Anyway, nice tank ,they will adapt to anything.

I'd lose that tall plant. I'm pretty sure it's dumb cane, also called diffinbaucea(sp?) I think. It is poisonous to frogs. Chinese evergreen is a nice plant with easy requirements. Correct me if I'm wrong on the dumb cane.

I don't think thats what it is, I have the name at home i'll have to post it later. I did find something about it being bad for cats/dogs to eat, but the frogs should not be chewing on it...

Looks like Syngonium podophyllum - won't hurt your frogs but will probably soon grow to tall for your tank.

kyle1745 Aug 24, 2003 07:01 PM

Ok its a Nephthytis "Holly Holly", as listed from Exotic Angels. I picked it up at a local store, and it should be fine. I spoke to a couple people who have used them, since I asked after I found info about them being bad for cats and dogs. It will be fine, and I don't think it will get much taller. A little taller would be fine by me.

That's not dumb cane but dumb cane is even dangerous for people to eat. If you cut one in half and get the juices on your hand it burns for a little while.
