has this ever happened to anyone?

FLAohHerper Oct 31, 2007 06:23 PM

So I had what I thought, and personally probed, were 2 females in the same enclosure for the last few weeks to wait until the pairing process beings very soon. They have both eaten and stayed out of eachother's way,and today I walk in,and...they are copulating! So first,I need to work on my probing skills I guess, second, I'd like to figure out which is the male(they are both about 6 to 7 feet long), and rethink some of my pairing.I just don't understand while all of the sudden they decided to go at it..although I do live in S.FLA and it has been cooler and raining lately, so that may have triggered it.It sure was a nice suprise thought. Is there a good way to tell male/female from copulating position..Like maybe the male's tale is the one that wraps over the females?Oh well,It was a nice suprise and I guess this is a good sign to start my other pairing.Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

thanks,
mike

Hi, sometimes a males hemipines may be ther blocking the probe from being inserted.

Also you may be able to figure which is which, because typically the male lines up on top and rides the female around also, my female when receptive usually cruise there tank with tails lifted and smearing urates smothered with phermones all over the tank!

Well.. I had someone send me a male on loan to breed to my big female. The 'male' courted my female, stayed on top of her for 2 months, wrapped the tail, the whole nine yards. No babies. It turned out the 'male' was a female. Very weird.
Did you see actual copulation or just courting?
I would re-probe to make sure you do in fact have a male.
Good luck!

thanks for the responses. So typically 2 snakes of the same sex can tangle up?Like a few posts up said, tured out he had 2 males that locked up for 2 months....Maybe I have 2 south beach males!?You think it is a good idea to throw another male in there and see what happens?I know hes a male for sure,so hell go to the female im thinking..

thanks,
mike

If it's already been shown that 2 males will go together (and in my case, 2 females) and look like they are courting, I don't think throwing in another male will make any difference.
I think the simplest thing to do would be to recheck the sexes of the two 'females'.
Good luck!
