TroublemakinReptiles Nov 01, 2007 12:19 AM

I am new to this forum, And I would like to Introduce myself and my kids. My name is Trisha and I, along with my fiance, run a reptile rescue located in Alvarado, tx (TroubleMakin' Reptiles Rescue). We have 4 Green Iguanas, 2 Australian Bearded Dragons, 1 Jones Armadillo Lizard, and 1 African Fattail Gecko. Then many other reptiles that are in the rescue waiting to be adopted out, but the ones that I am posting are our babies, and are not going anywhere!! Here they are:
First is Ig Monster. She is 9 years old, and was rescued 8 years ago.

Next is Brain. He is 6 years old, and was rescued 4 years ago.

This is Beelzebob. He is 2 1/2 years old and was rescued 6 months ago.

Here is Ivy. She is 1 year old, and was rescued 1 year ago, as an itty bitty baby.

Here is Grumpy. (Australian Bearded Dragon). He is 3 years old, and was rescued almost a year ago. He is my fatman!!

This is Chevelle. (Australian Bearded Dragon)She is 1 year old, and was rescued 1 year ago.

Next is Tank. (Jones Armadillo Lizard) His age is unknown, and he is actually the only one who was not a rescue. He was purchased.... I couldn't resist him!

And last but not least, this is the newest member of the 'official family', I just fell in love, and I don't think we will be adopting her out, i want to keep her. Her name is Geezer, she is an African Fat-tail Gecko. Her age is unknown. She was rescued about 3 months ago.

Well, they were all terrified at first, thus aggressive. We run a reptile rescue, so when they come in, they are stressed, and some of them are sick or injured which adds to it. I generally just give them a little time. What I start with, is whichever one I was trying to acclimate to us, I move them into the living room, because it is busiest of the house. This way they can get used to the new smells, sounds, and sights of the new environment.
Then after a few days of that, I start talking to him/her. I just put a chair in front of the cage and tell them about my day, or whatever. I am currently reading "Saltwater aquariums for dummies" because we are looking to start one up, so when I read, I just read aloud, this gets them used to your voice, and having you right there and not trying to eat them, gets them thinking.
After about a week of no handling, just talking, I start to handle them. Every day if possible, and get them used to the new people around them. Your guy may have been calmer with his previous owner, but he is scared and out of his environment now. So he is most likely on the defensive. Just handle him and get him to realize that you are not a threat. If he is already a juvenille or adult You can also let him free roam, let him tongue flick around and see his new surroundings. Let him free roam for about an hour or so, this way he is walking around you and realizing that you are not there to attack him. Just be patient and handle him often. He will calm down, just BE PATIENT that is really the best advice I can give you!

thanks for the advice.. my only problem is the house is not free from safe right now..
but i do know the old owners have her in a smaller cage which im going to make it across my wall in my room
her cage is a corner cage so i think its harder for her to think im going to attack her .
shes fine when i get her out of her tank she says on my shoulder and flicks with her tougne and everything but she goes on my head ? is there a away to stop this ?
she is kinda like a resuce if you think of it i got her for free becuase they did not wanther anymore
she is missed about 10-12 inches of her tail ( they told us she was almost near death 3 years ago )
and i dont think her mouth is aligned right either from the mbd she had.. they told me they fed her tomatos the bad food
so really even though she dislikes me now i think i really saved her life in the long right

There isn't a way to get her to stop wanting to climb on your head. Iguanas feel safe in high places, so she is naturally going to want to climb as high as possible and hang out there. That sucks that they fed her tomatoes, they are ok every once in a while, but not all the time. Have you found a good foodchart on iguanas yet? The one I use is www.greenigsociety.org/foodchart It is really good. Congrats on taking her in though, she needs a good home.
