Will this be fine temp wise?

Spankenstyne Nov 01, 2007 01:55 AM

Hey folks, a chance to pick your brains.

Ok so I've built myself a nice new rack for some of my other serpents and have gotten to thinking I may be alright keeping my BRB's in there for some time until they outgrow it, and get new 4x2x2's. It's set up for my KSB's though and the Herpestat is set so the "hot spot" area is at 93 degrees. I know BRB's ideally should be kept at around 85 (maybe 90 max but not longterm), but with this rack the cool end is around 72-75ish with enough space to easily escape heat, or to warm up if too cold.

My thoughts are that I may be fine with such a gradient that they'll always have plenty of space and opportunity to thermoregulate and avoid getting too hot for too long. While I hate to make assumptions, one would think that in nature they encounter some pretty warm temps at times and spots of more than 85 to heat up on before retreating to regulate. I understand we can't compare our enclosures to nature but I think the concept applies in this case.
Any thoughts?

The main reason I'm contemplating this is that the basement where the rack is located is a much more stable & constant temperature. Plus the rack having a proportional thermostat I'll have much greater control over the conditions, while now they're upstairs on heat tape on a dimmer that I check periodically.
So while I think I have the temps right where they are now, I know for a fact that there are times it gets a good bit warmer overall & have much less control overall with fluctuations. Plus I've become convinced that the temp gun may be too precise and harder to get a good reading by reading specific hot & colder spots when checking temps. It can vary several degrees over a few inches.

Sorry about the long post but wanted to include any info I could to help anyone wanting to offer advice.

Thanks in advance!

ehh thats a bit iffy, they really shouldnt be over 85, 93 is sure to kill if they stay there long enough

I'd have to agree, 93 is simply too hot and if they got there they might be stupid enough not to leave until it was too late.

Remember, while they do live in a tropical climate, they live on the ground and in high humidity, hiding in the day, hunting at night. Even if the daytime temps were to spike higher, they'd be in the cooler forrest litter.

I agree with Russ and Dave, those temps would be way too hot. And through my experience you can't trust the intelligence of a snake to get away from something that may be uncomfortable or dangerous. But if you could get the temps down to a suitable range I would say that putting a BRB in there would be a good idea, because as you said it would be more stable temperature wise.

I would suggest trying to get one rack spot hooked up with its own heat source and thermostat, and then you can set it for the brb.

Thanks for the input. I'll leave them on the separate dimmer controlled unit then. I'll just move it downstairs by the rack and adjust to get more ideal temps instead.
I kinda figured it would be the case, but being newer with BRB's wasn't sure if they were as forgiving temp-wise as some of the other stuff I keep.

I've usually had greater success with other stuff more towards the cooler end of their temp spectrums so I should really stick with what's historically worked and steer clear or getting stuff too warm.

Thanks again, this forum kicks much arse.
