rhino viper care sheets

b3napoleon Aug 23, 2003 02:27 PM

I am purchasing a rhino viper in october. I was wondering if anybody knows of a good place to find care sheets for them. I know the general care, but I would like as much informations as possible before I bring him home. Thank you.

I don't have a care sheet online, but I have been keeping rhino's for a long time. I can tell you that the most often made mistake is keeping them too hot. They do best in a lower temperature range (75-78). Most people think that since they come from a tropical area, they should be kept hot and humid. But what these animals do in the wild is hide down in the wet muck to keep cool, they can't handle heat. Good luck,

Thank you for the advice. My house is at a constant 78 degrees, so i shouldnt have to do anything about heat. I am thinking about a solid lid, with ventilation holes to let some of the humidity escape. Should I do that or just use a screen lid?

I use a lid that is 2-layers. It is screen on the inside, then a half-inch gap then 1/4inch hardware mesh on top. This keeps me from having to worry about a fang coming through the screen if I accidentally lay my arm on it while reaching over. The 1/4inch hardware mesh also keeps me from worrying about anything falling on it and tearing the screen. A wooden top with holes in it is not enough ventilation unless you have additional vents on the sides of the cage and your rhino will start barfing up half digested rats.
good luck,
robbie
