Komodo bacteria?

iant Nov 02, 2007 08:35 AM

Do Captive Komodo Dragon's lose the septic bacteria in their saliva? Or is this A species specific adaptaion? You would think that since our captive herps arn't exposed to the same bacteria and infections as they would be in the wild that the dragon would lose this advatage. Any ideas? many thanks

it is not a bacteria but a venom. Do a google search on venom monitors "Dr. Fry" and you will find more information regarding this topic.

They have found venom proteins in quite a few lizards. The levels arent enough to do any real damage though. It's the bacterial coctail found in the mouth of the kamodo that does the damage. Here is a link to a study done on captive and wild kamodos. http://www.jwildlifedis.org/cgi/reprint/38/3/545.pdf
