Axanthic Question

toshamc Nov 02, 2007 12:41 PM

So I am going to make some selectively bred hets this season - I am working with VPI line. My question is ....

Does it matter what the normal looks like?

I have Axanthic looking normals, bright yellow normals, regular normals - I'm trying to figure out if which would lend itself better to the project. My goal is not to just make another set of hets - but to make hets that will produce crisp clean babies that don't brown out as adults (or at least minimize the browning).

On one hand I'm thinking a bright yellow minus the yellow might make for a crisp clean Axanthic. On the other hand - I'm thinking if I use an adult that is darker Axanthic looking already - if that dark look carries over to the offspring - then when I breed the hets back to the Axanthic it might reduce the "brown out" into adulthood. And on the third hand if it just doesn't matter - then I guess it just doesn't matter.

This might be one of those things no one has really paid attention - but if you have your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

What about the fires, and or the vanillas, aren't these supposed to help clean up other morphs and also stop the browning as adults? probably a bit more expensive then the normals though.

Yeah - my intent was just to play around with and hopefully expand on the basic Axanthic - without having to cross it with another morph. There are plenty of people working with crosses - I just wanted to see if I could build a better base morph - not enough people working on that.

I'd say go with the darker animals. A good example would be the "Charcoal" SK Axanthics, or some of the Black Axanthics VPI is working with.

I think the lighter axanthics produce some good looking babies at first, there crisp clean good contrast. but the lighter ones do brown out alot more than the darker ones in my opinion. the darker ones do produce a cleaner snow from what i've seen also.
The black axanthics that Tracy has are pretty exceptional looking they capture the true reduction of yellow pigment.
