Lighting/Heating question

Pikados Nov 02, 2007 09:57 PM

I will be getting a corn snake next week, and have been working on getting its tank set up. I am using a UTH, because I am a poor college student, so I avoid using my heater whenever humanly possible. Heating only the tank is a whole lot cheaper than heating the entire room.
The problem is I'm not home much during the day, so the light in the room is rarely on. I don't want to leave my snake in the dark, but I can also not afford to get a fluorescent light.
Will it get too hot if I have a basking light AND a UTH? I am starting off with a 10 gal tank (but a friend will be giving me his old 30 gal tank when I need to upgrade). If I get a basking light, it will have to be directly over the UTH. Is that OK? If I do that, what wattage do I need? I purchased a 50, thinking I want a low wattage if I pair it with the UTH. Is that OK, or should I get a higher wattage?

Well, I set up the tank with the UTH, and according to my thermometer it's not getting far above 70, on the warm side (this after being plugged in over night). Apparently I am going to NEED another heat source just to make it safe for my snake. The UTH is not heating the air much, though I can tell the substrate is nice and warm.
