How do you keep humidity up in vision cages. I have sealed off the back part for the 6ft one and more than 3/4 of it on the 4ft cage. I use newspaper and refuse to go back to aspen. Any ideas on how to keep the humidity up on a consistent basis.

Daily Misting helps, blocking off vents helps using a substrate that retains moisture is best. The comprimise is using a humid box, IE tupperware with lid with proper substrate. I have used Cypress mulch and Coco fiber in humid boxes in the past. Inconjunction with a strick misting routein, you shuld have no problem with humidity.

Best of Luck

>>How often do you mist?

With or without a humid box?

I try and mist daily but it doesn't always happen. With a humid box you only need to mist twice a week unless your in a really dry area.

A humid box when properly built only has a small entrance for the animal its a moist hide basically.

I use a garden type sprayer for all my cages.

cypress mulch. works great

Bighurt Nov 03, 2007 10:36 PM

>>cypress mulch. works great

Only downsides I had with it where;

1-It harbors insects
2-Its hard to clean
3-It can be hard to find at different times of the year (winter in the north)

I keep Large Boa's so spot cleaning mulch is a lot more than product consuming than other species. So i just use krinkled kraft paper, however the mulch would be great in a humid box.

Is this stuff better than newspaper? And do you crumble it up or just lay it down.

Thanks again

IMO Yes, It is a neutral color so it looks better than paper. Nor does it contain ink oraganic or other so there is no worry. Its also cheaper unless cheaper than buyin the paper, I don't read the paper.

I lay it flat, like paper. It is already krinkled and is quite absorbant.

Good Luck

It is better than newspaper for large snakes IMO. It also gives some texture to the cage bottom (not rough but not smooth) and so the snake has better purchase when shedding or crawling. More absorbent for sure.
