Nov 4, Hobo is out!

PHRatz Nov 04, 2007 10:45 AM

It's only his 3rd year here but for the last 2 like clockwork he's gone underground the 3rd week of Oct. & not come back out until mid March.
I went out to pick the newspaper up off the driveway & there's Hobo!! He wanted food too.
I was so surprised but then.. it's been in the 80s every day for a week & is going to stay that was for the next week. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.
As I recall for the last 2 years by this time it was chilly & stayed that way most of the time.
He's fine he just wanted food & I made a puddle of water for him too because I thought he was gone & I've already brought his water dish in the house to keep until spring.
Guess I need to bring that back out.

I think I recall being a few hundred miles northeast of you from your last posts. Its also been in the 80's during the day in my area as well. I had turtles out all weekend and even one out at 5:30 this morning. On a typical year mine would have been down already as well. But this warm fall has kept mine out and eating. Mine finished off two dozen night crawlers between them this weekend. These is supposed to be a cold front coming in tonight but then they say it will be back into the 80s this weekend.. At that rate it will be mid to late November before they go down for good

Until yesterday, a few of mine were still out too.

I had three out this morning. I was out at 10:30 checking on them, picking up dog poo.. doing what I usually do. I was out there in long pants, I'll tell ya I was about to fry!
It's WARM out there. That early it was 88 on my front porch (of course that's the time of day the sun hits the whole thing) I had the A/C on in the house before 11 am.
I guess there's no real need for me to be concerned because I know for sure that they are burrowing under in the evenings when the temps go down.
This is just one of those years apparently.

I spoke/wrote too soon. Young Miss Louise is out and about today and its only in the 60's here.

This has been a strange year. The temperatures haven't been too off, but mine aren't going down as per usual. All of my Ornates are just sitting there. They dig in every night, but bask all day. Some of the Easterns are still breeding.

Yup, one of the males here was trying to get frisky, but the female wasn't so interested.

In the evening yesterday a "cold front" moved in. It's in the 40s right now but the weather reports are that by tomorrow afternoon it'll be back in the 70s. I know they went under their grass inside their little houses but it wouldn't surprise me to see them again by tomorrow.

It has been a strange year but I can recall one year when I ran the air conditioner on Christmas Eve because it was so warm outside & inside. Then it got really really cold from January to March. I don't think this is all that weird for this region but geeze it would have to happen the first year I let them stay outside and worry all the time!
