New Scrub

toddbecker Nov 04, 2007 07:09 PM

Just thought I would let everyone know I went to the Richmond Reptile Expo today and picked up my first amethystine scrub python. Beautiful little guy but quite the attitude. I have had snakes for over 15 years and haven't been bit in over four years. Within ten minutes of getting home and getting him out and getting him into his enclosure he tagged me on the thumb. He is little so not a big deal but darn it, I had a good streak going and now it is busted.lol. What makes it so difficult with these guys is the fact they are tree snakes and when I was holding him to transition into the cage he tightly wrapped around my fingers and when I tried to release him in the cage I couldn't get him off and he tagged me. He is about 4-5 feet long and has nice "normal coloration. I have named him Ares after teh Greek god of War because of his attitude. Hopefully this will fade but if not I will adapt my techniques to accommadate him. I will post pics next week after he adjusts and I feed him. Todd

same story with my scrubby. I havent been bitten in ages, had him around my neck and went to adjust my shirt and he tapped me on the thumb. Ive been working with him and hes not mean so much as nervous, he is curious and almost friendly at times but the poor sap bites himself! LOL! One time I was holding him and was allowing him to crawl to the floor, but as his head passed his tail, somehow, he constricted his own neck. It sounds funny but it was serious, like a chinease finger trap he couldnt let go. I dont think he would have died but he was choking and gasping for air. Writhing in agony. I had to unravel him myself. Truely, this species is the ultimate predator. So impressive, and comical! Reminds me of Kaa from Disneys Jungle Book.
