Won't eat his fruits and veggies...

mwrinkle Nov 04, 2007 08:00 PM

I've been trying to vary my dragons diet lately. He eats some amount of leafy greens nearly every day. So I tried him out with some diced fruit and veggies including peaches, oranges, pinapple, peas, lima beans, green beans, and carrots. Would the fact that this was all canned instead of raw unprocessed material have anything to do with him turning his nose up at it?

Dragons never cease to amaze me. It's dramatic how the tastes of one differ from another.

The vegs. I feed are green beans, red pepper, carrot (not too much carrot because of Vitamin A) yams, yellow squash, Zucchini. The squash and zucchini seem to be the most universally popular. I do feed all fresh though. The squash, zucchini, carrot and yams are easy fresh since you just peal them and grate some on top then put the leftovers in a bag for another day.

As fruits I feed raspberries, blackberries, apple & mango once or twice a week. There is a lot of sugar in fruits. Some dishes will have all the raspberries, etc. picked out and some will have everything else gone but the raspberries still there.

I occasionally feed my guy canned veggies and fruits and he really seems to enjoy them. but like BDlvr said..I guess all dragons are different and they decide what they like...lol

I don't see anything wrong with the canned. I have just never tried feeding them myself

I would avoid canned fruits and vegeables, mostly because, at least with vegetables most see to be over cooked and mushy (except maybe corn). Frozen or fresh is best in my opinion.

I also recommend fresh fruit or frozen over canned as well. Too many fruits in cans are soaking in thick syrupy liquid which just adds alot of extra sugar that isn't needed.

Only add a small amount on their salada, but berries and melons seem more likely to be eaten than other fruits.

I'll try some fresh items again in a couple of weeks, but in the case of berries if there are any rasberries or blackberries I am unlikely to leave any laying around for the dragonas Im rather keen on them.

At my house the dragons get the 1st run and I get the leftovers.

I was going to reply to this and say" BDlvr..that's sick!..lol" but I'm beginning to notice that my guy is taking over here as well..and I only have 1..lol grocery shopping just isn't the same now..lol I guess with all the dragons you have, it's just easier for them to take over! only the best for the babies! have a good one!!

When I go to the store, by the time I get 6 bags of greens, 5 vegs, and 1 or 2 fruits for the dragons, plus 10 apples for the crickets and superworms, carrots and oranges for the roaches, there really is almost no room left in the cart for people food. lol.
