A good friend of mine took me to a spot to see timbers today and boy did we see them!
In just two hours of walking around in a sunlit quarry we saw 9 different timbers. We don't flip rocks, just wiggle the field hook under rocks and listen for them, and always scanning with our eyes in the shade spots and ovious basking areas. Most were seen on a vertical stone wall coming out to bask (gravid females?)
My friend was telling me how his dad and grandfather used to be able to find 25-50 timbers and even more copperheads. Then he decided to go to the top of the stone wall and look down onto the ledges while I stayed at the bottom and watched the 4 timbers I could see,he looks down over and immediatly spots a small black phase then says "hey Mike,I see a copperhead"I practically run to the top to see it.This is the first copper I have ever saw in the wild and was well worth the hike.In fact, from looking down on the ledges,I could see the copper and two timbers at the same time.I really have to take a camera there soon.
