Rescued Iguana - Questions

amyinvegas Nov 05, 2007 12:58 PM

Hi,

We rescued an iguana yesterday who was not being taken care of at all. The list of care-related issues could go on and on, but I have a few questions up front.

1. The iguana is about 1.5 years old and was originally purchased from a Petsmart store. He is about 2' long right now. His tail has quite a bit of brown on it. Is this something for concern?

2. He has a cluttering of white "bumps" on his face.... any idea what they could be?

On a side note, he never had anything in his habitat to give him humidity. I was looking at one of the products on this page and was wondering if anyone could tell me if any of these would be good to buy for him?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Amy

Their tails are not quite as bright green as their bodies, and most iguanas do not hold onto their bright green coloration, they turn a brown and dark green. It could be natural coloration. Take a look at the brown scales, if they are identical to the rest of his scales, then I wouldn't be concerned, but if they are a different texture, it could be burns, or even a scale infection.

I would have to see a picture of them to know for sure, I can't think of anything off hand. Are they on his face, or more toward his neck? Because Iguanas have bumps right behind their head, and sometimes they are white, not the same color as the rest of his head/neck. They are called the Tuberculate scales. You can see them in this pic:

Are those the bumps you are talking about?

i am thinking the white bumps on your igs face maybe some salt deposit. when they sneeze it will turn white if you look real close to your igs face and it looks a little crusty than i would say thats it you can try wipeing it with a wet paper towel or let him/her have a nice long soak in the tub then wipe the face. if it goes away than thats what it is if not i would take him/her to vet to get it checked.
