advice

Ryn0 Nov 05, 2007 02:43 PM

i'm looking to buy a black throat monitor, my experience is mostly with snakes so any advice would be great. most importantly is housing, i know they like hides and things to explore, but do they like to climb? how tall and how long should i build the cage? the one i am looking to purchase is only 2 feet long, but i would like to go ahead and build him a cage that will last a long time, also any info on their personality, habbits, and querks would be greatly appriciated. thank you

My advice would be to search through the active threads and past thread.

This has been discussed so many time in the last month it is outrageous.

check out our site, look in the caresheets and the FAQ, there is lots of info there.

i suggest starting out in a small cage for acclimation, before moving to a large cage. a Blackthroat is a large lizard, you should expect at least a 6 ft animal as an adult, and 4 ft in the first year, properly cared for.

for a single animal, an 8 ft cage would be the minimum, but you should go as large as you can.

as for a 2 ft animal, that sounds like a common size for wild caught juvies. there are babies available right now, and i would suggest starting with as young an animal as possible, quality makes a huge difference.
