High Red Southern Update: Eating great!!

FL_Herps Nov 05, 2007 03:36 PM

As the pics clearly show, my new high red southern hognose is now eating really well. Today, was the third day in a row since he decided to start eating again that he followed the pinkie and then took it off the tweezers.

Thanks again Kevin your encouraging words during the time (which looking back, was actually not all that long) when he was not feeding for me.
Like a number of people said, it is no big deal that he wouldn't eat for a week or two and I just got a little overly worried.

He still refuses to "chase" it like the southerns in Tom's videos, but as long as he is eating consistently I'm happy!
I'm thinking he will probably go after the food with more aggression as he continues to get totally used to everything here and as he gets older and leaves his "baby stage" (from what I have heard, it sounds like they become more aggressive feeders as they age).
Right now though...he will follow it, rub his nose on the pinky's face for a second or two, and then open his mouth (he won't chase and grab it).
(Like I said though, however he wants to take the food is fine by me.)

~Alex

In this first pic, he was a little spooked by the noise of the container lid coming off...and he flattened out his head and body a bit.
I love all their defensive postures!

After taking this shot...it looked to me like he was admiring his reflection. lol

Thanks!

It is certainly a bit of weight lifted off my shoulders.
Hopefully, now he will be unstoppable!

I have been reading your post.....you have a great hog if you got it from Tom, he lives an hour from me and I also talk to him about my two southern's all the time. He takes pride in his collection. My WC male of 4 years now will not eat from november till march! The 1 year old female ate all year but now has gone off feed for 2 weeks and does not look like she is in molt yet.....wonder if she will do as the male now? I don't worry so much if the don't eat for a week or so, I just leave them be for a while then offer food ...good luck and I'm glad he is doing well!

Oh, that's cool that you live near Tom. Yeah, he is a really great guy and I know I got an exeptional animal from him.

Also, I am very used to the idea of snakes going off feed for a couple weeks at a time for sometimes unexplained reasons (or in your case because of the season)...the only reason I was so concerned in this instance was because this is actually the first hognose that I have kept and I spent some big bucks on him.
Even though everyone said it was no big deal, having an expensive snake that I have never kept before...I couldn't help but be a little more nervous and worried than I would be if any of my other hatchlings went off feed.

Thanks for the kind words.

I can understand what you are saying.......i spent a lot of time last November feeding my female. I am from the old school and feed all my snakes anoles/toads and frogs. I get heat for it but I have not had any problem doing it until this year my Male Southern was regurging but I put him on metronidazole for a week and he is fine now. at first I though it was a parasite and put him on panacur which did not help. He is back to normal and is now on his 5 month no feed. Good luck with your Hog!

Thanks so much Kevin for the compliments!

I was totally blown away when I unpacked him...never seen any other southerns like him!

The real fun part now will be to see how nice he looks in a couple of years!

I'll be keeping everyone posted!
