I have seen many very expensive BP's at shows but rarlely see them leave the sales tables. Are they often sold at shows or just end up being traded between dealers and breeders?

Peter that is a great question. I myself wonder the samething. I have imposed my own $500 rule, And cant understand spending thousand and thousands of dollars on pythons, Well let me take that back If I could I would! lol , well any high end collectors wanna contribute to these questions?
a "Law" not a "Suggestion" lol.
Look at the average price being asked for a morph on the classifieds. Thats what most are actually selling for at this time. That price range will change (usually, but not always, in a downward direction) over time. It's a waste of time (and feeders!) to advertise an animal at a totally unrealistic price, so when the supply increases beyond the limits of a certain price, that price WILL drop. But not until.
So yes, morphs are actually selling at or close to the high prices you are seeing.

The Avalanche has already started-it is too late for the pebbles to vote....
another point that needs to be made is that like the original poster stated, those spending the huge amounts of cash on these morphs are more than likely breeders although there are those high end collectors out there that want something rare. The way I've looked at this all along is that if we can't afford for an animal not to breed, we don't buy it. We are collectors first and breeders second. We only had 6 clutches of eggs this year and we have yet to advertise any animals for sale (including male pastels) and not sure if we are going to. It's nice to look at and clean racks full of pretty snakes.
But to answer the original question, yes we have spent multiple thousands of dollars on idividual animals in the past and will again in the future if we just have to own the animal.
