Brumating at 60? yes or no

merlin7676 Nov 05, 2007 06:29 PM

Okay so I did a search on the forum and came up with different answers so I'm posting. My variable kingsnake stopped eating awhile ago and I've been unsuccessful at getting him to eat. S I figured I'd go ahead and brumate him.
The coldest I'm getting on him is in the bedroom (coldest room of the house). Temps are right around 60-61. I know that it will get a little cooler in there as the temperatures outside drop but I don't think it'll be more than 1-3 degrees. Is this sufficient or should I put some frozen water bottles or such on the outside of one side of this tank and swap out to get a few extra degrees cooler?

thanks
shawn

Ithink 60* is very chilly if your a snake and would be fine in my opinion, though i am not familiar with South Western kings. But keep clean water bowl because he may still be a lil active(always keep water avail in the winter)

We moved from Philly to Florida a couple years ago and now can only cool our snake room to 60°F in the winter. We typically cool them from Dec 1st to March 1st. The variables experience minimal weight loss at 60° and produce viable eggs. I haven't noticed a difference between cooling them to 55° or 60°.
