AMERICAN CROCODILES IN FLORIDA

herpsltd Nov 06, 2007 12:02 PM

Heres a couple of pics I took last Sunday at Flamingo in Everglades National Park. These were taken by the store and fish cleaning platform. They weren't at all shy. The closer pic is a 8-9' toothless croc[probably female] that looked very old. I literally walked up to her close enough to touch if I had wanted to. She had no fear of man at all. The other pic was taken across the canal and he was about 12' long and looked to be a young croc. Numerous boats of fishermen and tour boats approached within 4-5' to which he completely ignored. Crocs here in Fl. have made an amazing comeback and are really quite numerous in certain areas....Tom Crutchfield

Thats awesome, I was actually at that exact same spot in September.. There's a large male acutus that resides there as well, they estimate he's around 13 feet. My friend and I saw him right near that ramp until he submerged and was literally impossible to see.

The comeback of american crocs in Florida is one of the great successes in targeted conservation. many thanks to everyone who has been or still is involved in these efforts.
