more red tegu problems - good and bad news

reptilian9 Aug 23, 2003 07:12 PM

My juvie red's tail (remember the pics a few weeks ago?) is almost completely healed! No more scabs! Most of the shed is gone! I bought some "shed-ease" and it helped a lot in the bath water.

The bad news: My tegu's armpits have been shedding oddly - I thought it was related to the shedding problems, but after all the baths and tail being better, he has this spot under his arms that sheds over and over again. I took him to the vet, and it seems it's a fungus of some sort. He game me some silver sulfide (something like that) cream to put on it daily. His left eye is also swollen, and he keeps it closed a lot. I got some eye drops for that also. The cage is clean, temps are right, and I keep it as humid as possible. He's eating well also (although a little less than usual). I'm going back to the vet in a week and a half, so I'll let everybody know how it's going. I had x-rays done too and everything internally looks great - bone structure, lungs, etc. I just wanted everybody to know that the tail is looking great! The baths helped so much. I'll post some tail before/after pics sometime.

dont forget that fruit is an essential part of their diet so their skin can shed properly, lots of vitiman C. Soaking daily in clean water is also important. if you have a fungus problem you may ask your vet about bathing in Nolvasan diluted 20:1, Nolvasan (chlorhexidine diacetate), the only EPA-registered chlorhexidine disinfectant, works against at least 60 different bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and viruses. it is blue and runs $35-$50 a gallon.

Thanks a lot Bennett! Thats the kind of info I need. I can't wait to see what my vet thinks about that. After a few days of using the ointment, still no improvements. The vet told me that fungus takes a long time to get rid of though. I've been feeding my tegu fruits, he eats all kinds. Lately all he wants is meat though, so I implemented the SDZ diet w/strawberries mixed in. I'll let you know how it's going. Thanks again.

Thanks again for your input on the subject. It's nice to know that someone else had similar problems. I have to ask, how serious was your beardie's fungus problem? As I said, my tegu's arm area is having problems, and it looks like it hurts him to walk. He waves his arm/hand while he walks, like it hurts. I know it hurts when I touch it, because he pulls his hands away from me when I apply cream or pull of shed. Basically, when he moves now it looks like he is treating it as fragile, trying not to put pressure on it. We took x-rays and no broken bones. Does that sound like fungus? I'm pretty sure it's not MBD, he gets calcium/d3 suppliments, although the symptoms are like MBD.
