Syd May 22, 2003 01:28 PM

What is the exact type of Hibiscus that I can use in a Veiled Chameleon cage? There are so many different types of Hibiscus I am confused which is the right one? Hibiscus acetosella,Hibiscus furcellatus,Hibiscus lunariifolius the list goes on and on and on... Please help me as I do not want to place the wrong type of Hibiscus in my enclosure. Thanks.

Hi- I would have to say all hibiscus plants are safe. The names are given for different colored flowers they produce, I have pink, orange, and red hibiscus plants (flower color) and some also seem to have different shades of green in the leafs, there are allot more colors then what I have, but I just buy the basic ones from homedepot no fancy ones, what ever looks best, I buy. The most common one I would say is Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis, I see it all the time at homedepot, and it is on the non-toxic list. It is similar to how there are different forms of ficus trees (leaf color and shape), I have about 3-4 different kinds of ficus trees, but once again I buy what looks good, when I need one or two or five. LOL. The umbrella trees are a little different, you can't use just any, the larger leafed umbrella trees are toxic (Schefflera actinophylla) and the smaller leafed trees are safe (Eriogonum Umbrellum, Schefflera arboricola). Hope this helps!

There are different types of hibiscus. Some are tropical and can't live with any frost and there are other species that are like perenials and can survive the winter.

What you want is the tropical kind. I believe it is Hibiscus rosasinensis.
