Does black slate make for a good basking rock?

djfuente Aug 23, 2003 07:14 PM

I found some at home depot for pretty cheap and was wondering if caused any problems. I know that the edges can be kinda sharp when I break it to size, but I can get around that by grinding it down. Just curious if the stone poses any other serious problems. Thanks

I use it in one of my setups. The only thing is be careful with surface temps on it. Slate or most dark stones get extremely hot. Check the surface temps with a digital therm with a probe. Just tape the probe down and let it sit for a while. Check temps after the lights have been on for over an hour.
