Not very happy...

JenHarrison Nov 07, 2007 05:09 AM

On a whim tonight, I decided to re-probe the "female" rainbow boa I've had all these months...and turns out she's a male. He must have clenched the first time I probed when I bought him. He only went 3 scales deep the first time. This time, he went between 8-9. Damnit...now I have 2 males and no female. I was really stoked about having babies from these 2...but kept wondering why they weren't locking up.

*sigh*

I suppose my chances of finding an adult female are slim to none -- I barely ever see any of these guys out there.

Sorry to hear about the bad luck. Who knows, you may get lucky and find a nice gal. Good luck!

Trying to find breeding size "anything" this time of year is tough! Good luck Jen!

Hey Jen,

Sorry to hear that but it does happen. Typically males being inaccurately sexed as females. It's just part of their physical makeup. I actually got hit with that twice last year including one I sent to Mike Lockwood for a breeding loan. Egg on my face!! The real true test to determine sex is mating, the girls get gravid and the boys are smiling

but you say only way to tell is breed them what if the girl doesnt get prego in a male/female breeding but yet you have 2 unkowns turn out to be both boy and try to copulate lol not all animals know who and what they should be doing my friend has a boy dog and boy cat and well yeah ill leave it there lol.

The point was the only true absolute positive method is if you put two together and get babies, then you know you have a male and a female and duh, which is which!

Visually witnessing copulation like you implied is NOT proof of anything. (is a pretty good arguement though) Females can act like males, males can act like females etc. Until you have actual babies, you can't say for certain the sex of the animals in question. Yeah you can be mostly certain 99.99% sure but... until proven, there is margin for error. In addition, having actual viable babies also proves viability of parents, not all individuals are breedable.
