29 gallon tank okay?

fantasyxbabygurl Nov 07, 2007 08:38 AM

I had originally thought to build a 4' x 2' enclosure and use a divider until my future beardie was big enough but im also building a new boa enclosure and we hit some problems so it looks like we probably wont get the extra wood and good weather till spring.

I do however have a 29 gallon tank i was looking into putting geckos, but this can happen sometime next year instead. Could i put a baby in this 29 gallon and how long do you think it wold be able to stay in it, im hoping till june at least.

A 29 Gallon is the same size as a 20 Long only taller. It is 30" Long by 12" deep. That size is OK until your dragon is about 12" long then he/she should be moved into a larger enclosure. That should be only about 3 months from hatch date, 4 at the most. Sorry, but I think keeping him in one till June isn't a good idea. Maybe you could buy a 30 or 40 Breeder until then.

im not completly sure its 29 the guy said he thought it was 30 or 35 (im picking it up this weekend) i did see it i just wanted to round down just to be safe since theres 29, 30, 33, n 35 gallon tanks. ive had a 20 gallon b4 and although the length might have been the same it was definatly wider rather that higher. i guess i'll just measure it this weekend. thanks though

Yea. That's why I listed the measurements. For a dragon floor space is what's important. 36" x 18" would be OK till you build an adult size enclosure.

You pretty much have to measure glass tanks these days as the volume of liquid they can hold is not a good indication on the actual physical dimensions.

I used to have a 35 gal long tank and it was 36" long and about 18" deep or similar, I kept a bearded dragon in there till she was about 15" which was only about 4 months. The dragon was 8" long when I bought her and I moved her to her 5'x2'x2' adult cage 4-5 months later and she was very happy in it.

i took a look at what wood im going to have left over and figured i can build a 36L x 24W x 18H enclosure out of it. so i thought that might work for the beardie until it gets warm around here again (wisconsin). Have no idea what im going to do with so small of a cage when its empty next spring though, maybe leopard geckos will work. Thanks for the help though

that should work till the spring, though depending on how fast your little guy grows, he may feel cramped a bit by then.

With a tank that size, you certainly could house a good colony of leopard geckos (1:4 probably), or there are a few other lizards that will be happy in a tank that size, collared lizards, I think, will have to look up what interests you.

Its a good sizes for corn snakes and ball pythons, as well as several other smaller species of snakes. Lots of things to put in a cage that size.
