Enclosure question - people with troughs

reptilian9 Aug 23, 2003 07:28 PM

For those with pig troughs as cages - how do you do the lighting - hang a basking light from the ceiling? Did you make a removable top to the trough? How much does a 6 x 2.5 ft cost? Do tegus spend their time trying to climb out? Thanks in advance.

Troughs are AWESOME! I used them for my monitors and tegus. I just cut plexiglass to fit the top, hinged the center section and screwed in a porcelain fixture up under the stationary section of plexiglass. (screw the plexi on the stationary half with screws to the edge of the trough) You can drill small vent holes or drill a 3 inch hole and cover it will a drain cover. (Home Depot) Use a 45 watt Halogen flood lamp and 6-8 inches of mulch... PERFECT!
The humidity is easy to maintain, easy to clean and they last forever. I never had trouble with tegus climbing or getting out.
Good luck,

I have kept many tegus in these. I used them for all the babies I hatched. At one time I had over 100 babies in a 4x2... don't try that! That was too many! lol
I used them for most of the gravid adult tegus, they make great nesting cages. I housed 25 pound red males in them as well.
I would have switched all the tegs over to them but there was no room. I had most of my stuff in Visions. (6x3)
I don't breed tegus anymore. I am ball python only now.
