inbreeding?

bigguykev36 Aug 23, 2003 07:46 PM

Is it inbreeding or imbreeding? I don't know, but I was wondering different people's views on it. has it ever caused genetic defects in the gecko? does it affect lifespan? I've heard about keeping it "all in the family" to bring out certain genetic traits, but I didn't know if it's "right" or not. Is it something that would happen in nature?

what are your views on the topic?

inbreeding is fine for just a generation or two, but just like with people it gets bad. it is possible for it to happen in the wild, but very very unlikely, and the chance of it happening over multiple generations is slim to none. my take on it, is when new morphs come, it'd be better to take a few extra years to diversify the line, then keep breeding them together.

Inbreeding is the source of much debate, Ron Tremper has been doing it for years and claims to have very few ill affects. I believe I Steve and Kelli Hammack say you should outcross every four generations or so but I can't say for sure (correct me if you read this post Kelli). The most common defect is the kinked tail which is becoming extremely common in the trade today but it is not considered serious so these geckos are usually sold for only a slightly reduced price. I also remember being on a website that I think was directed towards corn snakes that showed you how to come up with the quotient of inbreeding and used wild leopard geckos as an example. Inbreeding with people especially royalty used to be a common occurence but it was also a cause that ended the rule of the Russian czars and probably the cause of Ivans insanity. The restall died from Hemophelia I believe. Sorry I don't remember the last time I wrote a short post I can't answer a question without going off on a tangent about something else entirely.
