Crusty Back?

Uro_Sailor Nov 09, 2007 11:43 AM

My wife and I were in our local petshop when we were asked if we would like to adopt a Mali Uro. Being the Uro lovers that we are we took him in. The guy at the shop showed us the crusty spots on his back but we had no idea what they were. Its doesn't seem to cause him any pain and he is very pleasant. Until we figure out what it is we are keeping him separate from everone else. Any ideas? It basically looks the same color as his skin but its much thicker and has a gravelly, crusty feel to it. Thanks.

Just built up skin probably. One of mine had something similar for a while. Basically all I did was bathe him under hot water occasionally and apply baby oil to the spots to help loosen then up when he sheds. That was almost 2 years ago and they are gone now.

You still might want to take him to the vet for a checkup though.

It could be a number of things. I wouldn't do anything to treat it until you get him to a vet to determine what it is. It could be retained shed, maybe old burns or other scars, a bacterial or fungal infection, or something else entirely. Let your vet find out!

I don't know if this might be the cause...you need to ask a vet....but some lights have been implicated in skin thickening in some lizards when exposed to certain UVB lights.
Here is the study....
