breeding a BullxPine

banjobert Nov 09, 2007 08:33 PM

would a bull/pine cross be able to produce viable young? just curious but trying to convince parents of letting me get a snake and i might want to try breeding. also would the speicies play a roll in breeding, would it only be capable of breeding with a bull or pine snake? also how can we sex our crossbred?

*sniffle* why? why would you do that? it's...it's...just wrong...don't do that. Bullsnakes should be bred to bullsnakes. Pinesnakes, bred to pinesnakes. *sigh*

it is already a hybrid theres nothing we could do about that

Too bad there isn't a way to have snakes fixed. The major problem with mutt snakes is what happens to the offspring? If the person that ends up with the snake does not know it is a mutt & breeds it into a pure line it can potentionally ruin the breed. I have talked to someone before that bought a snake @ a show & didn't know it was a mutt til I told them. They were told the snake was a Sinduran Milksnake when they bought it. Turns out that is a made up name for a Sinaloan Milk Snake (Lampropeltis t. sinalaoe) X Honduran Milk Snake (Lampropeltis t. hondurensis). Weather you are for or against hybrids, it is wrong to sell snakes without telling the purchaser it is a crossbreed.

I agree. I have never been in favor of hybrids. And wonder if you could actually have snakes fixed?

You could not breed it and keep it as a pet, rather than pollute the genetics of more snakes - just an idea.

Keep your snake as a pet and buy a pair of pure snakes to breed. Please understand that Pits are far less tainted than many other snakes and most people into them really hope to keep it that way. Tom Stevens

thank you for the advice. i won't try to convince my parents to breed it. on an unrelated note should i spend some time learning how to handle my dad's snake before i really start to convince my parents? what is the best begginer pit? how big a cage does an adult need? how big does it get? i like to know this stuff before i do anything.

Good Idea! as far as cage size I'd recomend 4x2 for all but the biggest pit.

I keep a breding pair of Bulls in my Orchid/plant room in a 40 gal "breeder" cage with cypress mulch. The female Kansas is 6' and the male Texas is about 4', and I find that the cage size is just fine for a pair. To make more room for them, I have two large 8" clay flower pots turned upside down with large cracks knocked out for them to shed on and hide in, and two pieces of slate for them to bask or climb on. Another pair of bulls lives in a 30 gal 'breeder' which as the same foot print as the 40 just with a few inches taken off the top. They arnt stackible, but they make nice display cages.
