Brumation Question

Joe_M Nov 09, 2007 09:34 PM

Pardon my ignorance, but is it common for snakes to go into shed while cooled. I am currently cooling a pair of black milks, and my albino eastern. When I checked on them this morning one on the blacks and the eastern had clouded up. Temps are currently at about 57 deg. Coincidence? Thanks.

joe i myself dont brumate my snakes but if i understand correctly with black milks you have to if you are not living in a similiar climate.
to answer your ?'s though reptiles will go through all of their normall functions while brumating so yes its normal. the only thing that most reptiles dont do is eat while brumating but they must have fresh water available. other than that they just slow down and chill out.

Joe,

I have a few snakes brumating now that are in shed. Its not uncommon. It will take them much longer to shed than normal, but they will be fine.

Yes, it happens all the time. It takes quite awhile for a snake to shed while being brumated - somewhere in the neighborhood of three weeks - but just about every Honduran I have has shed during winter cooling at one time or another.

Thanks Adam, Dave and Tim. I thought that was the case, but was curious as now all three snakes that I am cooling are in the blue. Seems like a pretty simple process, but can't be too cautious.

Where did you get that animal?! Is that a hatchling photo?

Thanks
